Nearly two months had passed between the days on the coast and the sunny Saturday morning Marcus knocked on the door of Danaâs apartment. She lived in a one-bedroom in a gated four-plex in a working class neighborhood that she loved for its casual, beach-town feel and proximity to both the water and Golden Gate Park.
She opened the door without looking through the peephole, sure it was the deliâs deliveryman with the soup sheâd ordered, hoping it would settle her stomach.
Her mouth dropped open when she saw her one-night lover standing there, a wax-lined bakery bag in his hands.
âI brought you cookies. White chocolate macadamia nut.â
Dana closed her mouth, covered it, and ran to the bathroom where she promptly threw up.
Marcus followed behind her and Dana was helpless to interfere as he held her hair back while she puked repeatedly. Sweaty and exhausted, she closed the lid and reached up to flush the toilet.
âI⦠Thank you,â Dana wiped her mouth on the dampened washcloth Marcus was holding out to her. She sat on the toilet lid, shaking slightly. âI havenât been feeling well lately. I think Iâm coming down with a virus or something.â
âDanaââ
âI donât feel like eating cookies,â she added, weakly. âOnly tossing them.â
Marcus raised one eyebrow. âAt least you havenât lost your sense of humor.â
Dana shrugged. âI guess you had to be there. Oh, wait. You were there. This is mortifying.â She made a move to get up and Marcus steadied her as she stood in the cramped bathroom, pulling herself up against the bathroom vanity and reaching for a toothbrush. She applied some toothpaste and turned to Marcus. âIâm pretty much horrified at this point. Please make yourself at home. Iâll be with you once I pull myself together.â
The nausea had let up by the time Dana had dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. She took a few minutes to wash her face but didnât bother with makeup. She did not understand why Marcus had shown up on her doorstep after all these weeks, but heâd already seen her at her barfy worst so she figured he could deal with her natural look. She did manage to brush her hair and pull it back into a neat ponytail.
When Dana entered the living room ten minutes later, Marcus was on her couch reading a tech biography sheâd left lying around. He slouched casually on the couch, one leg (but, thoughtfully, not his shoe) stretched out. His jeans fit perfectly and he was wearing a short-sleeved tee that showed off his muscles. It had a bit of a v-neck and when Dana saw the sprinkling of hair on his chest, she couldnât help but remember how it had felt brushing against her nipples the night theyâd made love. When sheâd gotten back to the city, she at first tried to push thoughts of Marcus out of her mind, throwing herself into her work. But eventually, she embraced those thoughts, and conjuring up memories of her fling had become prime fantasy fodder.
